You've Goat To Be Kidding

MOST people would say it’s not much fun going on holiday without a travel buddy. Well, apparently racehorses feel the same way.

Competitor in multiple races during the carnival, three-year-old gelding Outdone, won’t go anywhere without his friend Billie the goat. So when it was time to travel the 3700km or so to the Northern Territory from Victoria, Billie had to come along, too.

The pair was initially introduced to one another six months ago after trainer Richard Laming noticed Outdone was pacing in his stable.

“There’s a well-known history in the horse world of having goats in the stables to stop horses pacing because they calm them down,” Mr Laming said. “So I put a goat in and now they get upset if we separate them.”

A $90 investment, Mr Laming wasn’t sure whether the pair would get on, and said while they have a platonic friendship, they won’t be apart for long.

“If you took the goat away now, the horse would go nuts,” Mr Laming said.

“In fact, the other morning we were cutting Outdone’s hair and the goat went down with him to keep him calm.”

Another plus to having a goat in the stable is that the creatures pick up diseases before the horses, keeping the stables healthy. “But goats are pretty hard to kill, they don’t eat much and Outdone and Billie just hang around together,” Mr Laming said. “Sometimes Billie gets in Outdone’s way, but he just steps over him and Billie moves pretty quickly.”
